How to Set Up a Home Temple
The Importance of a Home Temple
A dedicated puja space in your home serves as the spiritual heart of your household. It provides a consistent, sacred environment for daily worship, meditation, and prayer. According to Vastu Shastra, a properly placed and maintained home temple attracts positive cosmic energies and creates an atmosphere of peace, prosperity, and divine connection for all family members.
Ideal Location According to Vastu
The northeast corner (Ishanya) of your home is the most auspicious location for a temple. This direction is governed by divine energy and receives the first rays of the morning sun. Other acceptable locations include the east or north walls. Avoid placing the temple in the bedroom, under a staircase, in the bathroom area, or in the south direction. The panchang can help you choose an auspicious day to set up your new temple.
Idol and Image Placement
- Idols should face west or south, so the worshipper faces east or north while praying
- Do not place idols directly on the floor — use a raised platform or shelf
- Keep idols at least an inch away from the wall for air circulation
- Avoid placing broken or chipped idols — they should be respectfully immersed
- The main deity should be at the center, with other deities arranged around it
- Avoid too many idols — quality of devotion matters more than quantity
Essential Elements
Platform: A clean marble, wood, or stone platform at waist height. Wooden mandirs in teak, sheesham, or mango wood are traditional.
Lamp: A brass or copper diya placed to the right of the deity. An eternal flame (akhand jyoti) during special occasions.
Bell: A brass bell at the entrance of the puja space — ringing it announces your presence to the divine.
Kalash: A copper kalash with water and mango leaves can be kept permanently.
Storage: Small drawers or shelves for puja samagri, incense, camphor, and mantras.
Daily Maintenance Tips
Clean the temple area every morning before puja. Change the water in the kalash daily. Replace flowers before they wilt — dried flowers should not remain on the altar. Light the lamp twice daily — morning and evening. Keep the space clutter-free and only use it for worship.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not store non-puja items in the temple. Avoid placing family photos among deity images. Do not let the temple collect dust. Ensure the area does not share a wall with the bathroom. Never place the temple above or below a toilet.
