What is Nakshatra Matching?

Nakshatra matching, also known as Ashtakoota Milan or Gun Milan, is the Vedic astrological system for assessing compatibility between prospective marriage partners. It compares the birth nakshatras and Moon positions of both individuals across eight dimensions (ashta = eight, koota = categories). This system has been used for centuries across India and remains one of the most consulted aspects of Hindu marriage preparation.

The Eight Kootas (Matching Factors)

1. Varna (1 point): Spiritual compatibility — measures the ego and temperament match between partners on four levels: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra.

2. Vashya (2 points): Mutual attraction and influence — determines the power dynamic and who has more influence in the relationship.

3. Tara (3 points): Birth star compatibility — evaluates health and well-being of the couple together based on the distance between their nakshatras.

4. Yoni (4 points): Physical and intimate compatibility — each nakshatra is associated with an animal, and the matching of these animals indicates physical harmony.

5. Graha Maitri (5 points): Friendship of planets — compares the Moon sign lords to assess mental compatibility and mutual understanding.

6. Gana (6 points): Temperament matching — categorizes nakshatras as Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (demonic) and evaluates behavioral compatibility.

7. Bhakoot (7 points): Emotional and financial compatibility — analyzes the relative positions of Moon signs for material prosperity and emotional health in marriage.

8. Nadi (8 points): Health and genetic compatibility — the most important koota, carrying the highest points. Nadi dosha (same nadi for both) is considered a serious obstacle.

Understanding the Score

The maximum score is 36 points. Generally:

  • Below 18: Not recommended for marriage
  • 18-24: Average compatibility — workable with effort
  • 25-32: Good compatibility — favorable for marriage
  • 33-36: Excellent compatibility — highly auspicious union

Important Doshas to Watch

Nadi Dosha: Same nadi can affect health of offspring. Remedial pujas can mitigate this.

Bhakoot Dosha: Certain Moon sign combinations create financial or emotional stress.

Gana Dosha: Deva-Rakshasa combination may lead to temperamental clashes.

Beyond the Numbers

Experienced astrologers look beyond gun matching scores. They also analyze Mangal Dosha (Mars placement), the 7th house in both charts, Venus and Jupiter positions, and dasha compatibility. Generate your kundali as the first step. Check the panchang for auspicious engagement and wedding dates. For thorough compatibility analysis, consult a professional astrologer.
