Ugadi / Gudi Padwa: Hindu New Year
What are Ugadi and Gudi Padwa?
Ugadi (from "Yuga Adi" meaning beginning of a new age) and Gudi Padwa both fall on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — the first day of the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar (March-April). This day marks the beginning of a new Samvatsara (Hindu year) and is believed to be the day Lord Brahma began creation. It also commemorates the coronation of Lord Rama after his return to Ayodhya. Ugadi Celebrations (South India)
Panchanga Shravanam: The most unique Ugadi tradition — families and communities gather to hear the reading of the new years panchanga (almanac). A Vedic priest or scholar reads predictions for the coming year based on planetary positions, including forecasts for rain, agriculture, health, and political affairs.
Ugadi Pachadi: A special dish made with six tastes — neem flowers (bitter), raw mango (sour), jaggery (sweet), salt, tamarind (tangy), and chili (spicy). Each taste represents a life experience, teaching that the new year will bring all flavors and we must accept them with equanimity.
Door Decoration: Mango leaf torans (garlands) are hung at doorways. Rangoli designs adorn the entrance. New clothes are worn.
Gudi Padwa Celebrations (Maharashtra)
Gudi Erection: A bright green or yellow cloth tied to a bamboo stick, topped with a copper or silver pot (kalash), neem leaves, mango leaves, and a garland. This Gudi is placed prominently outside the home, symbolizing victory, prosperity, and the welcome of the new year.
Shrikhand Puri: The traditional Gudi Padwa feast includes shrikhand (sweetened strained yogurt) and puris, along with puran poli.
Processions: Community processions with music, dancing, and decorated Gudis parading through streets.
