Choghadiya: Daily Auspicious Times
What Is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya (also spelled Chaughadia or Chogadia) is a popular Vedic time-division system used primarily in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other parts of Western and Northern India. The word comes from "cho" (four) and "ghadi" (a unit of time equal to 24 minutes), literally meaning "four ghadis" or approximately 96 minutes per slot. Each day (sunrise to sunset) and each night (sunset to sunrise) is divided into 8 Choghadiya periods, creating 16 slots in a 24-hour period.
The Seven Types of Choghadiya
Each Choghadiya period is ruled by a planet and classified as auspicious, inauspicious, or neutral:
Auspicious (Shubh) Choghadiyas
- Amrit (Mercury): The most auspicious — excellent for all positive activities, especially business, education, and communication
- Shubh (Jupiter): Highly favorable — ideal for religious ceremonies, marriages, and starting new ventures
- Labh (Venus): Means "profit" — particularly good for financial transactions, purchases, and business deals
- Char (Moon): Means "movement" — best suited for travel, journeys, and vehicle-related activities
Inauspicious Choghadiyas
- Rog (Mars): Means "disease" — avoid starting new activities; however, suitable for warfare, competition, and defeating enemies
- Kaal (Saturn): Means "death/time" — generally avoided for all auspicious work; however, some use it for tasks requiring long-term stability like construction foundations
- Udveg (Sun): Means "anxiety" — avoided for personal matters; however, suitable for government work and dealing with authorities
Neutral
- Char (Moon): While classified as auspicious, it is the mildest of the favorable periods, making it effectively neutral for major decisions
How to Read the Choghadiya Chart
The Choghadiya cycle follows a fixed pattern based on the day of the week. Each day starts with a specific Choghadiya at sunrise:
- Sunday: Starts with Udveg
- Monday: Starts with Amrit
- Tuesday: Starts with Rog
- Wednesday: Starts with Labh
- Thursday: Starts with Shubh
- Friday: Starts with Char
- Saturday: Starts with Kaal
After the starting Choghadiya, they rotate in a fixed sequence. The exact timing depends on sunrise and sunset for your location — check the daily panchang for precise Choghadiya timings.
Practical Uses of Choghadiya
Choghadiya is valued for its simplicity and daily applicability:
- Business meetings: Schedule important meetings during Amrit, Shubh, or Labh periods
- Travel: Begin journeys during Char or Labh Choghadiya
- Financial decisions: Sign contracts or make investments during Labh
- Religious activities: Perform pujas during Shubh or Amrit
- Medical: Start new treatments during Amrit (avoid Rog)
- Quick decisions: When you cannot consult an astrologer, Choghadiya provides a quick reference
Choghadiya vs. Full Muhurat
It is important to understand the difference:
- Choghadiya is a quick, daily reference tool — simple and practical for everyday decisions
- Full Muhurat analysis considers the complete panchang (tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vara) plus your personal kundali
- For major life events (marriage, Griha Pravesh, business inauguration), always use a full muhurat analysis by a qualified astrologer
- For daily activities, Choghadiya provides reliable guidance without needing an astrologer
By incorporating Choghadiya awareness into your daily routine, you can make more aligned decisions and time your important actions for the best possible cosmic support.
