The Science of Muhurat Selection

In Vedic tradition, time is not uniform — each moment carries a unique cosmic quality that influences the outcomes of actions begun during it. Muhurat (auspicious timing) is the science of identifying those moments when cosmic energies align favorably for a specific purpose. Whether you are starting a business, getting married, moving into a new home, or beginning any significant undertaking, the muhurat can make a meaningful difference.

The Five Elements of Panchang

Every muhurat is evaluated using the Panchang — the Vedic almanac that tracks five (pancha) essential elements (anga). You can check all five daily on the Purohit panchang page.

1. Tithi (Lunar Day)

Tithi is the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month (15 in Shukla Paksha and 15 in Krishna Paksha).

  • Generally auspicious: Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Trayodashi (13th)
  • Generally avoided: Chaturthi (4th), Ashtami (8th), Navami (9th), Chaturdashi (14th), Amavasya (30th), and Purnima for certain activities
  • Rikta Tithis: 4th, 9th, and 14th are considered empty and should generally be avoided for new beginnings

2. Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion)

The Moon passes through 27 nakshatras in a lunar month. Each nakshatra has a distinct character:

  • Fixed (Sthira): Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada — best for permanent activities (construction, marriage)
  • Movable (Chara): Ashwini, Punarvasu, Swati, Shravan, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha — ideal for travel, vehicle purchase, starting a journey
  • Soft (Mridu): Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati — excellent for artistic pursuits, learning music, and celebrations
  • Sharp (Tikshna): Moola, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha — suited for tantric practices and surgery, but avoided for auspicious occasions

3. Yoga (Luni-Solar Combination)

There are 27 yogas formed by the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon:

  • Most auspicious: Siddha, Amrit, Shubha, and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga
  • Inauspicious: Vaidhriti, Vyatipat, Parigha, Vishkumbha

4. Karana (Half-Tithi)

Each tithi has two karanas. The seven movable karanas cycle through the month:

  • Favorable: Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja
  • Avoid: Vishti (Bhadra) — considered very inauspicious for any good work

5. Vara (Day of the Week)

Each day is ruled by a planet, making it favorable for specific activities:

  • Sunday: Government work, leadership, authority matters
  • Monday: Travel, agriculture, peaceful activities
  • Tuesday: Property disputes, surgery, competitive activities (avoid for auspicious occasions)
  • Wednesday: Education, business, communication
  • Thursday: Spiritual initiations, marriages, learning
  • Friday: Marriages, festivals, luxury purchases
  • Saturday: Iron work, oil-related activities (generally avoided for auspicious events)

Additional Considerations

  • Lagna (Ascendant): The rising sign at the muhurat time adds another dimension of precision
  • Rahu Kaal: Always avoid the Rahu Kaal period for any auspicious activity
  • Personal chart alignment: The ideal muhurat should also harmonize with your birth chart

For important life events, consult an experienced Vedic astrologer who can weigh all these factors together and select the strongest possible muhurat for your specific situation.
