Durga Puja: History, Rituals, Significance
The Story Behind Durga Puja
Durga Puja commemorates the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the eternal victory of good over evil. According to the Devi Mahatmyam, when no god could defeat Mahishasura, the combined energies of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva created Goddess Durga — a warrior goddess with ten arms, each bearing a divine weapon. After a fierce nine-day battle, she slayed Mahishasura on the tenth day, known as Vijayadashami.
When is Durga Puja Celebrated?
Durga Puja is primarily celebrated during Sharad Navratri (September-October) over ten days, from Pratipad to Dashami of Ashwin Shukla Paksha. The main celebrations span the last five days — Shashthi through Dashami. Check the panchang for exact dates each year, as they follow the lunar calendar.
Day-by-Day Rituals
Shashthi (Day 6) — Bodhon: The face of the Durga idol is unveiled. Goddess is ceremonially awakened and invited into the pandal.
Saptami (Day 7) — Pran Pratishtha: The idol is consecrated with life force through Vedic mantras. Nabapatrika (nine plants representing nine forms of Durga) is bathed and worshipped.
Ashtami (Day 8) — Maha Puja: The most significant day. Kumari Puja (worship of a young girl as Durga) takes place. Sandhi Puja marks the junction of Ashtami and Navami — considered the exact moment Durga slayed Mahishasura. 108 lamps are lit.
Navami (Day 9) — Maha Navami: Grand offerings and havan. This is the last full day of worship before immersion.
Dashami (Day 10) — Vijayadashami: Sindoor Khela (married women apply sindoor to each other), followed by the emotional Visarjan (immersion) procession.
Regional Traditions
In Bengal, Durga Puja is the biggest cultural event, with elaborate pandals and community celebrations. In Gujarat, the focus is on Garba and Dandiya dancing. South India celebrates it as Golu (doll arrangements). North India observes it as Navratri with fasting and kanya puja.
