Ganesh Chaturthi: Celebration Guide
The Story of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. According to mythology, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from turmeric paste and breathed life into him. When Lord Shiva unknowingly severed his head, he later replaced it with an elephants head, making Ganesha unique among the gods. The festival falls on Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada month (August-September). Check the panchang for exact dates.
Preparations Before the Festival
Decide on the duration of your celebration — 1.5 days, 5 days, 7 days, or the full 10 days (Anant Chaturdashi). Choose an eco-friendly clay (shadu) idol when possible. Prepare the altar area with a raised platform, decorative backdrop, and rangoli. Gather all puja samagri including durva grass, red flowers, modak, coconut, and incense.
Sthapana (Installation) Puja
1. Ganesh Avahan: Bring the idol home with devotional songs and music. Place it on the decorated altar facing east or west.
2. Pran Pratishtha: The most important step — invoking divine life into the idol through Vedic mantras. This transforms the clay form into a living divine presence.
3. Shodashopachara Puja: Perform the sixteen-step worship including snana (bathing), vastra (clothing), gandha (sandalwood), pushpa (flowers), dhupa (incense), deepa (lamp), and naivedya (food offering).
4. Modak Offering: Offer 21 modaks — Ganeshas favorite sweet. Traditional steamed modaks are filled with coconut and jaggery.
Daily Worship During the Festival
Perform morning and evening aarti daily. Offer fresh flowers, durva grass, and naivedya. Chant the Ganesh Atharvashirsha and sing Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva. Many families invite friends and community members for evening aartis, creating a festive atmosphere of collective devotion.
Visarjan (Immersion) Ceremony
On the final day, perform the farewell puja. Apply kumkum and offer the last naivedya. Carry the idol in a procession with drums, dancing, and chanting Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukdya (O Lord Ganesha, come again next year). Immerse the idol in a water body or use an eco-friendly home immersion kit.
