Navagraha Puja: Significance and How to Perform

Understanding the Navagrahas

In Vedic astrology, nine celestial bodies — the Navagrahas — influence every aspect of human life. These are Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Node), and Ketu (South Node). Their positions in your birth chart (kundali) determine personality traits, career prospects, relationships, and life events.

Why Perform Navagraha Puja?

When planets are unfavorably placed in your horoscope — a condition called graha dosha — they can cause obstacles in health, finances, relationships, and career. Navagraha Puja is a powerful Vedic remedy that pacifies malefic planetary influences and strengthens benefic ones. It is especially recommended during planetary transits (gochar), dasha periods, or when facing unexplained difficulties.

The Nine Grahas and Their Significance

  • Surya (Sun): Soul, authority, father, government — gemstone: Ruby
  • Chandra (Moon): Mind, emotions, mother — gemstone: Pearl
  • Mangal (Mars): Courage, energy, siblings — gemstone: Red Coral
  • Budh (Mercury): Intellect, communication, business — gemstone: Emerald
  • Guru (Jupiter): Wisdom, prosperity, children — gemstone: Yellow Sapphire
  • Shukra (Venus): Love, beauty, marriage — gemstone: Diamond
  • Shani (Saturn): Discipline, karma, longevity — gemstone: Blue Sapphire
  • Rahu: Material desires, illusion — gemstone: Hessonite
  • Ketu: Spirituality, liberation — gemstone: Cat's Eye

How to Perform Navagraha Puja

Preparation: Arrange nine small kalash or bowls representing each graha. Each graha has a specific color, grain, and flower associated with it.

Sankalp: State your intention and the specific graha dosha you wish to remedy.

Individual Worship: Each graha is invoked with its specific mantra, offered its associated grain, flower, and cloth color. For example, Surya receives wheat and red flowers while chanting Om Suryaya Namah.

Havan: A fire ritual using specific samidha (sacred wood) for each planet amplifies the puja's effect.

Aarti and Prasad: Conclude with collective aarti and distribute prasad.
