What to do
The home tarpana is simple and the detail that carries it is the hand. Bathe, face south, hold water with black sesame and a few grains of rice in cupped palms, and let it fall through the gap between the thumb and the index finger. That part of the hand is the pitru-tirtha, kept for ancestors; water for the devas goes over the fingertips instead. Who performs monthly tarpana, and the mantras and gotra names used, follow your own family's practice.
Keep ready: Darbha grass, black sesame, a little ghee and clean water.
