What is kundali matching (guna milan)?
Kundali matching compares the birth charts of two people for marriage using the ashtakoota method - eight tests (kootas) that together score up to 36 gunas. The kootas cover temperament, mental compatibility, health, prosperity and progeny. A score of 18 or more is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage.
How many gunas should match for a good marriage?
18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum. 18-24 is acceptable, 25-32 is very good, and 33-36 is considered an excellent match. But the total alone is not the full picture - Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha can matter more than the number, and both have recognised cancellations that need a proper reading of the charts.
What is Nadi dosha and can it be cancelled?
Nadi dosha arises when both partners have the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) and traditionally concerns health and progeny. It has well-known cancellations - for example when both moons share the same rashi or the same nakshatra with different padas. A purohit should check the cancellations before a match is ruled out on Nadi alone.
What if one partner is Manglik and the other is not?
When both charts have Mangal dosha, it is traditionally considered to cancel out. When only one chart has it, astrologers look at the strength of the dosha and cancellation factors before advising remedies such as a Mangal Shanti puja.
