What to do

The fast breaks only after the moon has been sighted, which is why moonrise matters more than the clock. Measured across the country on the same Sankashti night, moonrise runs about an hour and a half apart between Guwahati and Mumbai. Sight the moon, offer arghya, do the aarti, then eat.

Keep ready: A lota of water, durva in pairs, flowers, and a clear view of the sky.
