About Shivaratri Puja
Maha Shivaratri is the night of Shiva, on the Chaturdashi of the waning moon in Phalguna (Magha in the South's calendars). At home it is kept with a day's fast and the four prahar pujas through the night (char prahar), the linga bathed and offered bel patra in each watch, or with one prahar or the midnight nishita puja alone. In Bengal it is also called Shiv chaturdashi. Say which form your home keeps and whether you have a linga.
Duration: The full vrat runs from sunset to sunrise in four prahars of about three hours each; one prahar or the nishita puja takes about one to two hours. Agree the prahar and the timing with the purohit.
