A Friday Diwali gives 2027 a natural long weekend - Lakshmi Puja on Friday evening, Govardhan Puja on Saturday and Bhai Dooj on Sunday - which makes it an easy year for travel to your home town, and a busy one for purohit bookings.
What happens on each day
- Dhanteras (27 Oct) - the day for new purchases (gold, silver, utensils) and the evening Yamadeep lamp. Dhanvantari, the divine physician, is honoured.
- Narak Chaturdashi (28 Oct) - the early-morning abhyanga snan (oil bath before sunrise) commemorates Krishna's victory over Narakasura; in Tamil Nadu and Kerala this is the main Deepavali day.
- Lakshmi Puja (29 Oct) - the principal evening: Lakshmi, Ganesha and Kubera are worshipped after sunset during pradosh kaal. Homes are lit, and the puja is done in the fixed muhurat: for Delhi about 6:36 to 7:06 PM, before the Amavasya tithi ends. In Bengal, Assam and Odisha the Amavasya night belongs to Kali Puja, worshipped at midnight; with the Amavasya ending early this evening, check the Bengali calendar for the night of Kali Puja rather than assuming it is the Lakshmi Puja night.
- Govardhan Puja (30 Oct) - the Annakut offering commemorating Krishna lifting Govardhan hill. The same Pratipada is Bali Padyami in Karnataka, Bali Padwa in Maharashtra and Bestu Varas, the new year, in Gujarat.
- Bhai Dooj (31 Oct) - sisters pray for their brothers' long life; the festival's family close. It is Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Bhai Phonta in Bengal.

Lakshmi Puja evening is the hardest purohit slot of the year to get: every household wants the same short window on the same evening (in Delhi only 6:36 to 7:06 PM in 2027).
