Ganapati Homam: Why It Is Done, Vidhi, Samagri and Cost

Ganapati Homam is the fire ritual dedicated to Ganesha, performed to remove obstacles before any important beginning - a new home, a new venture, a wedding in the household, or simply a fresh start. It is one of the most frequently booked homams because it is short, self-contained, and traditionally done before other major ceremonies. Purohits in the south often call it Maha Ganapati Homam. This guide explains when it is performed, what happens step by step, the samagri, and what to expect on duration and cost.

When is Ganapati Homam performed?

There is no single fixed occasion - the homam is booked for a purpose, and the purohit picks a muhurat for it:

• Before major ceremonies - as the opening ritual of a Griha Pravesh, wedding, or Upanayanam, invoking Ganesha so the main event proceeds without vighna (obstacles).
• New beginnings - opening a shop or office, starting a business, before a child's first school year, after buying a vehicle or property.
• Removing persistent obstacles - when work, health or plans feel repeatedly blocked; many book it on their birthday star (janma nakshatra) day.
• Auspicious days - Chaturthi tithis (especially Sankashti and Vinayaka Chaturthi), and Ganesh Chaturthi itself - see our Ganesh Chaturthi guide.

Morning hours are strongly preferred - most purohits will schedule it between sunrise and noon.

The homam, step by step

• Sankalpa - the purpose is declared formally with your name, gotra and the specific intention (vighna nivarana, new venture, and so on).
• Kalasha and Ganapati avahana - Ganesha is invoked into a kalash or murti with shodashopachara (sixteen-step) puja.
• Agni pratishthapana - the homam fire is established in the kund with mantras.
• Ganapati moola mantra ahutis - the core of the homam: oblations of ghee, modak, durva grass and honey offered into the fire with the Ganapati moola mantra, typically 108 times; larger versions use 1,008 ahutis (repetitions of the offering) with the Ganapati Atharvashirsha. In Maharashtra a group of purohits may instead recite the Atharvashirsha a thousand times, called an Atharvashirsha sahasravartan.
• Purnahuti - the concluding complete offering, followed by aarti and prasad.

You will be seated with the purohit for the whole ritual and asked to offer some ahutis yourself - no prior knowledge needed; the purohit calls out every action.

Most purohits will send you the precise list on booking, and many can bring the samagri themselves if you ask - confirm this and whether it is included in the quote.

Duration, and what it costs

A standard Ganapati Homam with 108 ahutis takes about 1 to 1.5 hours with one purohit. Larger versions (Ashtadravya Ganapati Homam with eight offering substances, or 1,008 ahutis) take 2 to 3 hours. The ashtadravya, the eight offerings, differ by region; one Kerala list is coconut, jaggery, honey, sugarcane, sweet appam, sweet ada, black sesame and banana. Fully practical, and among the most common flat-friendly homams because the fire is small and the duration short.
