Griha Pravesh Puja: Vidhi, Samagri, Apartment Guide and Cost
Griha Pravesh is the Hindu housewarming ceremony - the first ritual entry into a new home, performed on an auspicious muhurat before you start living there. It is Gruhapravesam in Telugu, Grahapravesam in Tamil and Gruhapravesha in Kannada, and many Maharashtrian families call the whole day vastu shanti. The puja seeks the blessings of Ganesha, the Navagrahas and Vastu Purusha so that the household that moves in is protected and prosperous. The three types of Griha Pravesh
Purohits commonly distinguish three situations, and the puja is adapted to each:
- Apoorva Griha Pravesh - first entry into a newly built home on newly acquired land. The most elaborate form, usually with a full Vastu Shanti havan.
- Sapoorva Griha Pravesh - re-entry into a home you already own after having lived elsewhere for a long period, or entry into a purchased resale home. A medium form; Vastu Shanti is recommended when the previous occupants are unknown to you.
- Dwandwah Griha Pravesh - entry after rebuilding or major renovation, or after the home was damaged (fire, flood) and restored. The puja emphasises purification of the structure.
When you tell your purohit which situation applies, they will scale the vidhi accordingly - it is worth mentioning this in your first call rather than on the day.
When is Griha Pravesh done?
The muhurat is chosen from the panchang, considering the tithi, nakshatra and the position of Venus and Jupiter; certain months are traditionally avoided, and the window of good dates opens and closes through the year. Most households do the Griha Pravesh first on the chosen muhurat and shift belongings in the following days - the ritual entry is what needs the muhurat, not the moving truck.
Do not worry if your possession date misses a good window: the practical handover from the builder and the ritual entry are separate events, and purohits routinely advise waiting a week or two for the right day. The ceremony, step by step
A standard Griha Pravesh takes between one and a half and three hours, depending on whether a havan is included. The usual sequence:
- Dwar puja and first entry - the main door is decorated with a toran of mango leaves and marigolds, a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut is carried in, and the household enters right foot first, traditionally with the lady of the house carrying the kalash. In many South Indian homes a cow, often with her calf, is led in first and walked through the rooms before the family enters.
- Ganesh puja and sankalpa - obstacles are removed and the purpose of the ceremony is formally declared with names and gotra.
- Kalash sthapana and Navagraha puja - the nine planets are propitiated; in fuller versions each graha receives its grain offering.
- Vastu Shanti havan - the fire ritual addressed to Vastu Purusha, asking forgiveness for disturbing the land and seeking protection for the structure. This is the part most often trimmed in a simple version and always included in an Apoorva pravesh.
- Boiling of milk - milk is boiled in the new kitchen until it spills over, a deliberate symbol of overflowing abundance; many purohits then have you prepare a simple sweet (kheer) with it as the first food cooked in the home.
- Purohit's blessing and aarti - the ceremony closes with aarti, prasad and the purohit's blessings for the household.
Griha Pravesh in an apartment
Most Griha Pravesh ceremonies today happen in flats, and the vidhi adapts without losing anything essential. Practical points to plan for:
- Havan in a flat is normal and manageable. A small havan kund near an open window or balcony with the exhaust fan on is standard practice. Tell your purohit the room size; they carry or specify an appropriately small kund. Inform your society office in advance - smoke detectors in some gated communities are sensitive, and a heads-up avoids an awkward alarm mid-mantra.
- The main door is your door, not the building entrance - toran, swastik and dwar puja all happen at the flat's own threshold.
- East-facing seating is arranged inside the room - the purohit will orient the kalash and havan seating on the day; you only need a clear space of roughly six feet by six feet.
- Timing with the society: muhurats can fall early in the morning; most societies permit religious ceremonies at home but lifts and visitor parking for the purohit are worth arranging the evening before.
Samagri: what you need
Your purohit will send a precise list (and many can arrange the samagri themselves if asked - clarify this when booking). A typical list looks like this:

How many purohits, how long, and what it costs
A simple Griha Pravesh is done by one purohit in about 90 minutes. A full version with Vastu Shanti havan and Navagraha puja takes 2.5 to 3 hours and is sometimes done with two purohits. After the ceremony
Many purohits advise that the home not be left locked and empty on the night of the Griha Pravesh - someone from the household stays over, even if the full move happens later. Keep the kalash water until the next morning and pour it into a plant rather than a drain. The toran stays on the door as long as it looks fresh.
