Guna Milan: What the 36 Gunas Score, and Why 18 Is the Line

Guna milan scores two horoscopes out of 36 by comparing eight qualities, called kootas, and almost all of that score comes from the moon. Not the sun sign, not the birth date on its own - the position of the moon in each chart, which is why the birth time matters so much. The number that comes out of it is the first thing most families ask for, and the least understood: a 32 is not twice as good as a 16, and a 36 is not the goal. This guide sets out what each koota is worth, what the total means, and the two kootas that can wipe out fifteen points between them. The eight kootas and what each is worth

The points are not evenly distributed, and the weighting is the whole argument of the system - the later kootas, which deal with health, progeny and long-term compatibility, are worth far more than the early ones.

Varna, at one point, is the one families argue about most and the one the system cares about least. Nadi alone is worth eight - more than Varna, Vashya and Tara combined.

What each koota actually compares

• Varna groups the twelve rashis into four - Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra - as a statement about disposition, not birth community. The point is scored when the groom's varna is equal to or above the bride's.
• Vashya sorts rashis into Chatushpada (four-footed), Manava (human), Jalachara (aquatic), Vanachara (wild) and Keeta (insect), and asks how naturally one influences the other.
• Tara counts from one nakshatra to the other and back. Three of the nine resulting positions - Vipat, Pratyari and Naidhana - are inauspicious, and each direction is worth 1.5 points, so a half score here is common and unremarkable.
• Yoni assigns each of the 27 nakshatras an animal and scores the pairing, four for the same animal down to zero for a pair traditionally held to be natural enemies.
• Graha Maitri compares the planetary lords of the two moon signs - friend, neutral or enemy. This is the mental compatibility koota.
• Gana classes each nakshatra as Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. The same gana on both sides scores the full six, even two Rakshasas; Deva with Manushya scores five or six; a Rakshasa paired with either of the others scores one or nothing.
• Bhakoot measures the distance between the two moon signs.
• Nadi classes each nakshatra as Adi, Madhya or Antya, roughly a constitutional type.

The two kootas that score all or nothing

Bhakoot and Nadi do not award partial credit. Together they are fifteen of the thirty-six, and they are the reason a couple can look compatible and still come back with a low number.

Bhakoot dosha applies when the two moon signs fall 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart. Any of those and the seven points go to zero. Every other distance scores the full seven.

Nadi dosha applies when both people share the same nadi - both Adi, both Madhya, or both Antya. That is eight points gone at once, and it is the most common single cause of a score below the threshold. Roughly a third of random pairings share a nadi, so this is not a rare misfortune.

Both have recognised cancellations. Matching guides commonly list Nadi dosha as cancelled when the couple share the same rashi but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different padas, among other conditions; Bhakoot dosha has cancellations through the lords of the two signs. Whether a cancellation applies to a specific pair of charts is a judgement a jyotishi makes on the whole chart, not a rule you can apply from a table.

What the total means

The conventional reading runs like this:

• Below 18 - below the traditional threshold. Not a verdict on the marriage; the usual next step is a purohit reading the two charts properly for cancellations and remedies.
• 18 to 24 - acceptable by traditional standards. Eighteen out of thirty-six is the line almost every family uses, and it is worth noticing that the line is exactly half.
• 25 to 32 - a strong match; most kootas align.
• 33 and above - exceptional on this scale.

An unusually high score is not automatically the best outcome. Some jyotishis treat a near-perfect ashtakoota score with caution rather than delight, on the reasoning that two charts that similar share weaknesses as well as strengths. The number is a starting point for a reading, not the reading.

What guna milan does not cover

Ashtakoota compares the two moons. It does not look at Mars, which is why manglik status is checked separately and why a couple can score 30 and still be told to wait. It also says nothing about longevity, career, or the timing of the wedding. Those come from other parts of the chart, and the wedding date is a separate calculation again - see how marriage dates are fixed.

South India counts differently

If your family is Tamil or Malayali, the answer you are given is usually not out of 36 at all. Tamil Nadu and Kerala match by dasha porutham - ten porutham rather than eight kootas, called thirumana porutham in Tamil and jathaka porutham in Malayalam - and the list differs: Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasiyathipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Rajju porutham occupies roughly the place Nadi does in the northern system and is treated as the most serious, with Vedha close behind. In Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana you will meet both: many astrologers give a score out of 36 (in Telugu the match is called ponthana), others a porutham count.

Many South Indian astrologers, in Kerala especially, also check papasamyam: the malefic planets (Mars, Saturn, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu) in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses of each chart, counted from the lagna, the Moon and Venus. The groom's count should equal the bride's or slightly exceed it. It needs both birth times, and it is not part of any 36-point score.

The two systems overlap - Gana, Yoni and Vashya appear in both - but they are not interchangeable, and a score out of 36 will mean nothing to a family expecting a count out of ten. When two families follow different traditions, the usual resolution is for each side's purohit to read the charts in their own system rather than to convert a number. It is worth asking early which system the other family uses; it saves a confusing conversation later.

Checking your own match

You need the date, time and city of birth for both people. The time matters more than anything else here: the moon crosses into a new nakshatra roughly once a day, so a birth recorded near that boundary can be placed in the wrong nakshatra by an hour's error - and that one shift moves Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara together, twenty-one of the thirty-six points.
