How Marriage Dates Are Fixed: Kundali Matching to Muhurat

A wedding date is not picked from a list - it is fixed by matching the couple's kundalis, then finding the muhurat that suits both charts. This is the work of a purohit or jyotishi, and it is one of the most common consultations households book: before the wedding itself, someone has to say when. This guide explains how the process actually works - kundali matching, tara bala, the panchang windows - what a consultation session looks like, and what you need to bring to it.

Step 1: Kundali matching (guna milan)

Before dates are discussed, the two birth charts are compared. In the North Indian tradition this is Ashtakoota guna milan - eight parameters scored out of 36 gunas, with 18+ generally considered acceptable and higher scores better. Southern traditions use dashakuta / porutham matching instead, scoring ten (or more) poruthams. The purohit also checks for Mangal dosha and whether it is present in both charts, cancelled, or needs a remedy.

Online tools (including our kundali tool) can compute the scores mechanically. What the purohit adds is judgment: which mismatches matter for this couple, which are cancelled by other placements, and what remedies the tradition provides where something needs attention. A low mechanical score is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of a match.

Step 2: Finding the muhurat

Once the match is settled, the date search begins - and it is a genuine intersection problem:

• The season: vivah muhurats exist only in certain months - none during Chaturmas (roughly mid-July to early November) or Kharmas (mid-December to mid-January). See our verified vivah muhurat dates through December 2027 for the open windows.
• The panchang: within the season, only certain tithi-nakshatra-weekday combinations qualify - that is what makes a listed date a "muhurat date" at all.
• The couple's charts: a date that is auspicious in general may not suit these two people. The purohit checks tara bala and chandra bala (the day's star and moon against each person's birth nakshatra) and avoids dates that fall badly for either chart.
• The lagna: finally, within the chosen day, the purohit fixes the exact vivah lagna - the ascendant window for the ceremony's core rituals. This is why two weddings on the same date can have different muhurat times.

What a consultation looks like

A date-fixing consultation is a sitting of about 30 minutes to an hour, in person or on a call. The purohit will typically:

• match the kundalis (or review an existing match) and discuss anything that needs attention,
• shortlist 2-4 workable dates across the months you prefer, balanced against venue and travel realities,
• fix the lagna for the chosen date, and often note backup dates,
• advise on related ceremonies that precede the wedding in your tradition.

Many purohits who fix the date also conduct the wedding - one person carrying the thread from matching to muhurat to mandap. That continuity is worth asking for when you book.

Common questions, plainly

"The gunas are low - is the match off?" Not by itself. Several low-scoring kootas have classical cancellations, and remedies exist for others - this is exactly the case where a mechanical score needs a purohit's reading rather than a verdict from a website.

"Can we fix a date without matching?" Yes - if the match is already settled or the couple has decided, a purohit can go straight to the muhurat work with both birth details.

"There is no muhurat in the month we wanted." That happens - some months have none at all. The purohit will show you the nearest windows; our date tables show the season's shape at a glance.
