Which name to use
Pick the name your side uses; it becomes the title of the card. The ceremony itself, what each side prepares and how the muhurat is fixed are in our engagement guide.
- Sagai or mangni. The ring-exchange engagement across North and West India, usually with a short puja before the rings. The Hindi card offers सगाई and मंगनी.
- Roka. Common in Punjab and much of North India. It means "to stop": both sides stop looking for other matches. It is often held before the ring ceremony.
- Tilak. In many North Indian engagements the bride's side applies a tilak to the groom. The Hindi card offers तिलक as its own title.
- Sakharpuda. The Marathi name for the engagement. The Marathi card also offers वाङ्निश्चय.
- Nishchitartha or nischitartham. The South Indian engagement, "the settling of the matter": nishchitartha in Kannada, nischitartham or nischayam in Telugu and Tamil. Often the purohit reads out the lagna patrika, with the wedding muhurat, at this ceremony.
- Gol dhana. The Gujarati engagement, named after the jaggery (gol) and coriander seeds (dhana) shared at it. Until the Gujarati card is ready, make an English card titled Gol Dhana.
- Ring ceremony. The English name many use for the exchange of rings, whatever the tradition. It suits a modern English card.
Questions people ask
What should an engagement card say?
The opening line, both names with their parents, the date and muhurat, the venue, one line of request, and who is inviting. Our wording follows real printed cards in each language, and you can change the names, the date line, the programme and the lines at the top and bottom.
Who sends the engagement card, the boy's side or the girl's side?
Either side can. The maker asks who is inviting and names that side's child first. On one phone you can make both sides' versions from the same card at no extra cost.
Can you add the tithi and nakshatra for our muhurat?
Yes: the tithi on every card, and the nakshatra too on an English card for a city in the south or west (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa), the way cards there print it. Enter the date, the muhurat time and the city, and we write the line in the card's language, taken at the muhurat time and not at sunrise. You can change the words; check them with your purohit before printing.
Is the engagement card the same as the lagna patrika?
No. In Telugu custom the lagna patrika is the document the purohit writes at the engagement with the wedding muhurtam, exchanged with tambulam. In Kannada, lagna patrike is the wedding card itself. This page makes the invitation to the engagement; the wedding card is a separate card.
How much does it cost?
Nothing: making the card and downloading the WhatsApp image and the print PDF are always free, with no sign-up. The card carries a small purohit.app line at the foot; removing it is a small fee of ₹10, paid once for this card by UPI, card or netbanking, which helps us keep Purohit.app running.
Can I print it?
Yes. The PDF is a 5 x 7 inch card with 3 mm extra on each side for cutting. Any print shop can print it and does not need a CDR file.
Can I make it in Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati or Bengali?
Not yet. We add a language only after a native reader has checked every line. Until then, make an English card titled Nischitartham or Gol Dhana.
Are my details uploaded?
No. The card is drawn on your phone. Only the date, time and city go to our server, to work out the tithi line.
