Wording you can copy

A Hindi card opens with "॥ ॐ शांति ॐ ॥" or the Gita verse "नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि", gives the passing as "अत्यंत दुःख के साथ सूचित किया जाता है कि ...", lists the rites as labelled rows, asks relatives to come and pray, and closes with "शोकाकुल". These are the words the maker starts from. The names, the dates, the rites listed and the lines at the top and bottom are yours to change.

When is the first punyatithi?

The yearly shraddha is done on the tithi of death, not on the English date. We read the tithi at the time of death, not at sunrise, because the tithi can change during the day. That is why the time matters when you know it.

The first punyatithi falls on the same tithi in the same lunar month the next year, on the day that tithi covers the afternoon (aparahna), the part of the day a shraddha belongs to. If the tithi touches the afternoon on two days, we give the day it covers more and show the other one too.

In a year with an extra month (adhik maas) of the same name, the first shraddha comes in the extra month, because twelve months have passed by then. Later years use the regular month.

The date is always shown for your purohit to confirm, and you can print the English date or any date instead.

Questions people ask

What is written on a shradhanjali or 13th-day card?

The passing and its date, the rites with their date, time and place, a request to come and pray, and the family's names. These cards inform and request; they do not invite anyone to a celebration.

Is the 13th-day ceremony always on the 13th day?

No. Communities hold these rites between the 10th and the 13th day, and the purohit fixes the days from the tithi of passing. Type the dates your purohit gives you.

How is the first death anniversary (punyatithi) date worked out?

From the tithi running at the time of death, in the same lunar month the next year, on the day that tithi covers the afternoon. This is the rule panchangs use for shraddha dates.

Why is it on a different English date every year?

Hindu dates follow the moon, so the same tithi falls on a different English date each year.

What if there is an adhik maas (an extra month) that year?

The first shraddha comes in the extra month, because twelve months have passed by then; later years use the regular month. We show both dates. Please check with your purohit.

We follow the Tamil or Malayalam calendar. Does this work?

Not yet. Those calendars count the year by the solar month. Ask your purohit and type the date.

What is a telephonic besnu?

The family receives condolences by phone at a set time instead of a gathering. On an English card, choose "By phone only" and add the names and numbers; the card lists them with the time.

Is the photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The card is made on your phone, and the photo, the names and the address never reach us. For the punyatithi date, only the date and time of death and the city go to our server to work out the tithi, and they are not kept.

Does the card cost anything?

Nothing: making the card and downloading the WhatsApp image and the print PDF are always free, with no sign-up. The card carries a small purohit.app line at the foot; removing it is a small fee of ₹10, paid once for this card by UPI, card or netbanking, which helps us keep Purohit.app running.

Can I print it at a shop?

Yes. The PDF is 5 x 7 inches with a 3 mm edge for trimming.

Can one card name two people?

Not yet. Please make one card for each person.
