Shradhanjali Message in Hindi: 27 Shok Sandesh & Tervi Wordings

A Hindi shradhanjali card informs and requests; it does not invite. The sentences say सूचित किया जाता है (we inform you) and आपसे विनम्र प्रार्थना है (we humbly request you), never सादर आमंत्रित, and the card opens with ॥ ॐ शांति ॐ ॥ or the Gita verse नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि instead of Ganesha. Below are 27 wordings for each step after a death: condolence messages to send to a grieving family, the family's शोक सन्देश, the prayer meeting (उठावना, चौथा, श्रद्धांजलि सभा), the तेरहवीं card with ब्रह्मभोज and रस्म पगड़ी, a notice when there is no gathering, the Gujarati besnu and what it means, the first punyatithi and a thank-you. How the card is laid out

1. The heading: ॥ ॐ शांति ॐ ॥, the Gita verse, or ॥ शोक सन्देश ॥; a terahvin card names the rite, तेरहवीं संस्कार.
2. The photo with a garland, and the name with स्व० (also written स्व., short for स्वर्गीय, late) before it and जी after it. Some cards add the years of birth and death.
3. The passing, with its date: का स्वर्गवास दिनांक ... को हो गया है.
4. The purpose: उनकी पावन आत्मा की शांति एवं सद्गति हेतु (for the peace and good passage of the departed soul).
5. The rites or the meeting, each with its date, time and place.
6. The request: आपसे विनम्र प्रार्थना है कि आप पधारकर दिवंगत आत्मा के लिए प्रार्थना करें।
7. The family: under शोकाकुल (grieving) or शोकसंतप्त, or simply समस्त परिवारजन.

Words for the passing, and words to leave out

• स्वर्गवास (went to heaven) is the word most cards use; देहावसान is more formal; निधन is the plain word, used for anyone and the usual one for a younger person, and आकस्मिक निधन is a sudden death.
• बैकुंठ गमन or बैकुंठवास is used in Vaishnava homes, and a punyatithi card labels the date of death बैकुंठ लोक गमन; Krishna devotees write गोलोकवास. ब्रह्मलीन is usually kept for sadhus and saints.
• पूज्य (revered) goes before an elder: हमारे पूज्य पिताजी. It is left out for a younger person.
• Leave out the words of a happy card: शुभ, मांगलिक, सादर आमंत्रित, the 卐 and the kalash, and festive emoji. They belong to happy occasions.
• Instead of RIP, Hindi messages say ॐ शांति, भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजलि, भावभीनी श्रद्धांजलि or विनम्र श्रद्धांजलि.

Condolence messages to send to the family

1. For anyone

भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजलि। ईश्वर दिवंगत आत्मा को शांति प्रदान करें और परिवार को यह दुःख सहने की शक्ति दें। ॐ शांति।

2. When you knew the person

6. For a colleague

Notices 10 and 11 follow printed Hindi condolence cards; for a younger person पूज्य goes and निधन takes the place of स्वर्गवास.

The gathering where people come to sit with the family has a different name in each region. श्रद्धांजलि सभा or प्रार्थना सभा is understood everywhere (an office or a society holding one calls it a शोक सभा); उठावना (uthavna) is the word in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh; Punjabi and Delhi homes hold the चौथा (chautha), the fourth day, also called the उठाला (uthala); in Rajasthan the third-day gathering is the तीये की बैठक; Gujarati homes hold a besnu (below). Use the name your family uses.

The तेरहवीं card: ब्रह्मभोज and रस्म पगड़ी

तेरहवीं (terahvin; people also type tervi or tehravin) is the thirteenth-day rite that closes the mourning: a havan and shanti puja, daan, the feeding of brahmins (ब्रह्मभोज) and a shared meal. The rites lead up to it: दसवां on the tenth day, and on the twelfth the sapindikaran, which joins the departed to the ancestors. Most North Indian homes hold the terahvin on the thirteenth day, as its name says, but communities hold the closing rites anywhere from the 10th to the 13th day, so print the dates your purohit gives you. In रस्म पगड़ी (rasam pagdi) a turban is tied on the eldest son, or the eldest man of the family now, before the gathered relatives, to show that the family's responsibility passes to him; it is held on the fourth day or with the terahvin.

The verse is Bhagavad Gita 2.23, which Hindi condolence cards use in place of the Ganesha line: इसे शस्त्र काट नहीं सकते, आग जला नहीं सकती, जल भिगो नहीं सकता और वायु सुखा नहीं सकती। (weapons cannot cut the soul, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, wind cannot dry it). What besnu means, and a besnu notice

Besnu (બેસણું, also written besanu) is the Gujarati prayer meeting. The word comes from બેસવું, to sit: relatives, friends and neighbours come to sit with the family for an hour or two at the time printed on the notice, usually within a few days of the cremation. People come in white, bow before the garlanded photograph, offer a flower and leave quietly; some hold it in a temple hall with bhajans instead of silence. Some Gujarati communities call the sitting ઉઠમણું (uthamnu). A telephonic besnu (ટેલિફોનિક બેસણું) replaces the gathering: the notice says no besnu is being held and lists the family's phone numbers and the hours to call. The later rites appear on Gujarati notices as ઉત્તરક્રિયા. In Hindi the same gathering is the उठावना, बैठक or श्रद्धांजलि सभा above.

The first death anniversary is also called the बरसी (barsi). Traditionally the punyatithi and the yearly shraddha are kept on the tithi of death, so they fall on a different English date each year; some people also mark the English date. श्रद्धावनत (bowed in reverence) is the closing these cards use. Making the card

The shradhanjali card maker makes the card in Hindi, English, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil, with the photo in a garland. Its Hindi notice and terahvin card use the sentences of wordings 10 and 19; for the meeting it offers प्रार्थना सभा, उठावना, चौथा and श्रद्धांजलि सभा, and for the rites तेरहवीं संस्कार, दसवां, ब्रह्मभोज and रस्म पगड़ी, each with its own date and time. An English card can name the meeting a besnu, chautha, uthala or uthamna, and its "By phone only" choice makes a telephonic besnu card with the family's numbers. It does not make a Gujarati card yet, so send wordings 22 and 23 as text. For a punyatithi card it works out the date from the date and time of death and the city; show that date to your purohit.
