Mundan Card Matter in Hindi, English & Tamil Kadhani Vizha

A mundan invitation names the child and whose child he or she is, gives the date, time and place of the first haircut, and asks guests to come and bless the child. The samples use Wednesday 12 May 2027 only to show how the date is written; your purohit fixes the muhurat from the child's chart.

Mundan card matter in Hindi

1. From the parents, for a son

Make this card with your names and date. Or give this matter to a printer, or set it in your own design.

The date line is worked out for 9 am in New Delhi. The bracket names the grandparents, सुपौत्र meaning grandson; if the grandfather has passed away, स्व. goes before his name. चि. is short for चिरंजीव, may he live long. प्रीतिभोज ... से आपके आगमन तक means the meal is served from noon until you arrive, and the names under दर्शनाभिलाषी (eager to see you) are the child's brother, sister or cousins. Many cards add एवं समस्त ___ परिवार, with the family name, under the names.

2. From the grandparents

The child becomes हमारे पौत्र, our grandson, the parents move into the bracket, and the grandparents head the closing list. The request, programme and venue stay as in card 1.

3. For a daughter

Girls' mundan is done in many homes and not in others; follow your own custom. For a daughter the card says हमारी सुपुत्री (or हमारी पौत्री from the grandparents), and the bracket says सुपौत्री:

चि. is for a boy, so write her name alone, or with कु. (kumari) before it if your family writes that for girls, and ask guests to bless आन्या in the request.

5. A short card for a temple mundan with no fixed time

A temple or a tirth may give no fixed time: Tirumala at Tirupati, where the hair is offered at the Kalyanakatta halls, or the ghats at Haridwar and Rishikesh. The card then gives the date and the place and leaves out the time and the शुभ मिती line, because the tithi on a card is the one at the muhurat time. If you want one, ask your purohit which tithi to print. If guests are not travelling with you, say so, and invite them to whatever you hold at home on your return, with its own date and time.

Lines you can add

• The children's line. Like the मीठी मनुहार on Hindi wedding cards, the child's brothers, sisters and cousins can add their own request to come: हमारे छोटे भैया आरव के मुंडन में ज़रूर-ज़रूर आना ... पीहू, कबीर.
• The family deity: ।। श्री कुलदेवी प्रसन्न ।।, or the deity by name, beside ।। श्री गणेशाय नमः ।।.
• No gifts: आपका आशीर्वाद ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ उपहार है। (your blessing is the best gift).
• Other closings: स्वागतोत्सुक (eager to welcome you) in place of विनीत, or निमंत्रक (the inviters) when the elders invite for the whole house.

Mundan invitation in English

Make this card with your names and date.

From the grandparents, the opening reads "Mr. Ramprasad and Mrs. Savitri solicit your gracious presence & blessings on the auspicious occasion of the Mundan of their beloved grandson Chi. Aarav", with "son of Mr. Amit and Mrs. Priya" under his name, and they sign first. For a daughter it is "their beloved daughter" and her name alone, without Chi. For a mundan in North India the English card keeps the Hindi month and the Vikram Samvat.

Kadhani vizha invitation in Tamil

Tamil homes usually put the ear piercing on the card, often with the tonsure the same day, and many hold it at a temple. When it is the family deity's, the card says, in standard spelling, எங்களது குலதெய்வக் கோவிலில், at our family deity's temple.

Make the Tamil kadhani vizha card with your names and date. It names one grandparent couple on a single line and has a box to tick when the venue is your kuladeivam temple.

The parents speak, but the grandparents come first, one couple to a line, and the next line ties them to the child: இவர்களது பேரனும் எங்களது மகனுமாகிய, their grandson and our son. For a girl it is ஆகியோர்களது பேத்தியும் எங்களது மகளுமான, granddaughter of these and our daughter. A boy is செல்வன் and a girl செல்வி, with "to" joined to the name (கவினுக்கு). The time is a window, after 9 and before 10, and the parents sign at the end, the husband's name first. Some cards put the grandparents' village before their names, as in மீனங்குடியை சேர்ந்த ___ (of Meenangudi).

When the grandparents invite:

This one has the shorter date style, with ஆண்டு for the year and no tithi or star, and it writes the father's initial before the child's name (கா. for Karthik), as Tamil names are written. When more than one child's hair is offered, a card can list them all under முடி இறக்குதல்: and only the girl whose ears are pierced under காதணி விழா நாயகி:. Have an elder read the Tamil before you print.

Puttu ventrukalu invitation in Telugu

పుట్టు వెంట్రుకలు is the birth hair. Telugu homes also print the card in English, with (పుట్టు వెంట్రుకలు) in brackets under "Mundan Ceremony Invitation". For a card in Telugu, the maker writes this:

The line under the name says the astrologers have fixed the removing of the birth hair. మా స్వగృహం is our own home, ఆహ్వానించువారు those inviting, and బంధుమిత్రుల అభినందనలతో "with the greetings of relatives and friends". Have an elder read the Telugu before you print.

What goes on a mundan card

1. A line to Ganesha, with the family deity's line beside it if the mundan is a vow to the kuladevata.
2. The title: मुंडन संस्कार (mundan sanskar), the name North Indian homes use in Hindi and on English cards; Chudakarana or Chaula, the Sanskrit names, which an English card can print under "Mundan" (Chudakarana means making the chuda, the tuft or shikha some homes leave at the crown); or Mundan and Ear Piercing when the karnavedha (कर्णवेध), a sanskar of its own, is done the same day. Marathi homes say jawal (जावळ), Gujarati homes babri, and Kannada homes ಚೌಲ (chaula), or ಮುಡಿ (mudi) for the hair offered at a temple; ಜವಳ (javala) is the North Karnataka word. Tamil cards name the ear piercing, காதணி விழா (kaadhani vizha; kaadhu kuthu in everyday speech), or both rites: மொட்டை மற்றும் காதணி விழா or முடி இறக்குதல் & காதணி விழா, with மொட்டை (mottai), the shaven head, and முடி இறக்குதல் (mudi irakkudhal), taking the hair down.
3. Who invites, and the child: the parents, with the grandparents in a bracket under the child's name, or the grandparents, with the parents in the bracket.
4. The date sentence with the muhurat time, and the tithi line if you print one.
5. The request to come with your family and bless the child.
6. The programme: havan, mundan, ear piercing, and the meal (प्रीतिभोज or bhoj, lunch).
7. The venue, and where the meal is if it is somewhere else, such as the ear piercing at a temple and the lunch at a marriage hall in the same town.
8. The closing over the names of those inviting, with the children of the house.

Most homes hold the mundan in the child's first or third year, and many keep to odd years; the card does not print the age. At home or in a hall, with a havan and a meal, print the full card with a muhurat time.

The date line in each language

• Hindi: शुभ मिती वैशाख शुक्ल सप्तमी, संवत् 2084, with no nakshatra or lagna. The Vikram Samvat is 2084 from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, 7 April 2027, and 2083 before it. In a bright fortnight like this one every panchang names the same month (వైశాఖ శుద్ధ సప్తమి in Telugu). In a dark fortnight they part: North Indian panchangs end the month on Purnima, so the dark fortnight already carries the next month's name, and Krishna Panchami on 25 April 2027 is वैशाख कृष्ण पंचमी on a Hindi card but Chaitra Krishna (చైత్ర బహుళ) Panchami on a Telugu or Marathi one.
• English: the maker follows the ceremony's town: "Vaishakha Shukla Saptami · Vikram Samvat 2084" for Delhi or Haridwar, and "Plavanga samvatsara · Vaishakha Shukla Saptami · Pushya nakshatra · Mithuna lagna" for Tirupati or Chennai at the same hour. A Delhi home holding the mundan at Tirupati can type its own line instead.
• Telugu: the whole స్వస్తిశ్రీ ... సుముహూర్తమున sentence, with the nakshatra and lagna, and one clock time.
• Tamil: the Tamil year, month and day, பிலவங்க வருடம் சித்திரை மாதம் 29ஆம் தேதி, and a window of time. The Telugu year turns at Ugadi (7 April 2027) and the Tamil year at Chithirai 1 (14 April 2027), so a card dated 7 to 13 April names ప్లవంగ in Telugu and still பராபவ in Tamil, and both are right.

The tithi is the one at the muhurat, not the one at sunrise. On the sample day Saptami begins at 1:24 am, before sunrise, and runs until 11:14 pm, so a mundan at any hour of Wednesday's daylight prints Saptami; on a day when the tithi changes mid-morning, a 7 am and an 11 am mundan print different tithis. A panchang lists a time before sunrise under the day before: print the date and weekday of the morning guests must come, as Tamil cards do, while Telugu cards print the evening before and add (తెల్లవారితే ...), "as it dawns", with the next day's name.

Making the card

The mundan invitation maker makes the card in Hindi, English, Tamil or Telugu: you choose the title (Mundan, Chudakarana, Mundan and Ear Piercing, or Karnavedha for the ear piercing alone), the parents or the grandparents as hosts, and son or daughter, and it writes "Chi.", the "son of" line under the child's name and the closing names to match. It works out the date line from the date, the muhurat time and the ceremony's town, lets you edit it, and leaves the time and the line out for a temple with no fixed time. An English card can also carry a second child on the same day.
