Wedding Card Matter in English: Samples for Son, Daughter

wedding card matter in englishwedding invitation wordingindian wedding card wordingwedding card for sonwedding card for daughtermuhurtamrsvp

An Indian wedding card in English keeps the shape of a traditional printed card: an invocation at the top, the people inviting, the couple joined with "with", and the muhurtam printed to the minute. What changes from card to card is who is inviting. Each side prints its own card and names its own child first, so the groom's parents write "their son" and put the groom first, and the bride's parents do the reverse. Below is the complete wording for each host, then the lines for the muhurtam, the reception, RSVP and gifts. Our wedding card maker starts from wording like this and changes it when you choose who is inviting.

The order of the card

  1. Invocation, between double bars: || Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||, or your family deity in the same form, such as || Shree Gajanan Prasanna ||, || Shree Venkateshwara Swamy Prasanna || or || Jai Maa Durga ||.
  2. The hosts: "Mr. Rajesh & Mrs. Sunita Sharma", or in the South Indian style with the mother first, "Smt. Sunita & Shri Rajesh Sharma".
  3. The invitation: "cordially invite you to grace the occasion of the Wedding Ceremony of their son". The other two forms printed cards use are "solicit your gracious presence & blessings on the auspicious occasion of the Marriage Ceremony of their beloved son" and "request your ardent prayers and presence with family".
  4. The couple: the hosts' child first, then "with", then the other, followed by a "son of" or "daughter of" line. Traditional cards add Sanskrit honorifics: Chi. before the groom's name, and Chi. Sow. or Sow. before the bride's.
  5. Date and muhurtam: "Saturday, 5 December 2026" and "Muhurtam : 12.05 p.m."
  6. Venue, followed by "Lunch to follow" or the meal.
  7. Other functions, such as the reception, each on its own line or panel.
  8. RSVP and a no-gifts line, both optional.
  9. Closing: "With best compliments from", over the names of relatives and friends.

Every sample below uses Saturday 5 December 2026, a date on Drik Panchang's list of vivah muhurats (New Delhi, 11:48 am to 7:00 am the next morning). Your own muhurat time comes from your purohit.

When the groom's parents invite

|| Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||

Mr. Rajesh & Mrs. Sunita Sharma
cordially invite you to grace the occasion of the Wedding Ceremony of their son

Rahul
with
Ananya
daughter of Mr. Ashok & Mrs. Meena Gupta

on Saturday, 5 December 2026
Muhurtam : 12.05 p.m.

Venue : [hall name and address]
Lunch to follow

Reception : Saturday, 5 December 2026, 7.00 p.m. onwards, at the same venue

With best compliments from
[names of cousins, uncles and aunts]

R. S. V. P. : [name], [phone number]

When the bride's parents invite

|| Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||

Smt. Meena & Shri Ashok Gupta
solicit your gracious presence & blessings on the auspicious occasion of the Marriage Ceremony of their beloved daughter

Chi. Sow. Ananya
with
Chi. Rahul
son of Smt. Sunita & Shri Rajesh Sharma

on Saturday, 5 December 2026
Subha Muhurtam - 12.05 p.m. to 12.50 p.m.

Venue : [hall name and address]
Lunch to follow

With best compliments from
Friends & Relatives

This one uses the second printed verb, the mother-first order of names, the honorifics and the muhurtam as a span of time. Any of these works on either side's card; what must not change is that the bride's side names the bride first.

When both sides invite together

|| Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||

Mr. Rajesh & Mrs. Sunita Sharma
and
Mr. Ashok & Mrs. Meena Gupta
cordially invite you to grace the occasion of the Wedding Ceremony of their children

Rahul
with
Ananya

on Saturday, 5 December 2026
Muhurtam : 12.05 p.m.

A joint card needs no "son of" or "daughter of" lines, since both sets of parents are already named at the top. The closing can list both sides' relatives together.

When the grandparents invite

|| Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||

Late Mr. Ramnarayan Sharma & Mrs. Kamala Sharma
cordially invite you to grace the occasion of the Wedding Ceremony of their grandson

Rahul
(son of Mr. Rajesh & Mrs. Sunita Sharma)
with
Ananya
(daughter of Mr. Ashok & Mrs. Meena Gupta)

on Saturday, 5 December 2026
Muhurtam : 12.05 p.m.

Printed Indian cards can keep the eldest generation at the top even after they have passed away; "Late Mr ... & Late Mrs ... cordially invite ..." appears on printed templates as the opening line. When grandparents are the hosts, the parents move into the brackets under the grandchild's name.

When the couple invite

Together with their families
Rahul & Ananya
invite you to celebrate their wedding

on Saturday, 5 December 2026
Muhurtam : 12.05 p.m.

This is the modern form, for a card the couple send themselves. It has no "son of" lines; keep the invocation above it if you like.

Muhurtam, reception and the other functions

  • The muhurtam is printed to the minute, because it is the moment your purohit fixed and not a time for guests to arrive: "Muhurtam : 5.14 p.m." is a normal line on a printed card. Indian cards write the time with a dot, 12.05 p.m. If your purohit gives a span, print it as "Subha Muhurtam - 12.05 p.m. to 12.50 p.m." What a muhurat is explains how that moment is chosen.
  • "with" on the wedding card, "to" on the reception card: printed English cards join the couple's names differently on the two.
  • The reception gets its own panel, or its own card. English cards for Bengali weddings list the groom's side reception as "Bou Bhaat (Lunch)".
  • Other ceremonies go in the same style as the muhurtam, for example "Mandap Muhurt : 9.30 a.m.".

If you want the traditional date on an English card as well, it goes under the muhurtam. For the sample date it reads "Margashirsha Krishna Dwadashi · Vikram Samvat 2083" in the North Indian style, and "Parabhava samvatsara · Kartika Krishna Dwadashi · Swati nakshatra · Kumbha lagna" in the South Indian style, where the month runs from new moon to new moon and the lagna is the sign rising at the muhurtam. Our Hindi wedding card matter guide explains why the two month names differ. Kerala's English cards do the same job with the Malayalam-era date in brackets.

RSVP, gifts and the closing line

  • RSVP: "R. S. V. P." with a name and phone number, or "Please RSVP by [date] at [phone number]". English cards are the ones that ask for a reply; printed cards in most Indian languages carry no such line, and Hindi cards use उत्तराकांक्षी instead.
  • No gifts: "No Boxed Gifts Please" is the most common, on 8 of the 24 printed English templates we studied from one card printer. The softer forms are "~ No Gifts, Blessings Only ~" and "Presents in the form of Blessings only."
  • Closing: "With best compliments from", then the names of cousins, uncles and aunts, or simply "Friends & Relatives", as an Iyer wedding's English card has it. "Blessings From :" and "With Blessings and Love" are the other printed forms.

A WhatsApp message to send with the card

When the card goes out on WhatsApp, a short message with it does the work of the envelope:

Namaste! With the blessings of our elders, our son Rahul is getting married to Ananya on Saturday, 5 December 2026. The card is attached, and we would be honoured to have you and your family with us.
Rajesh and Sunita Sharma

Send the venue's map link as a separate message after the card, so guests can tap it.

Making the card

The wedding card maker starts from wording like this. It names your own child first when you choose the groom's parents or the bride's parents, uses "cordially invite you to grace the occasion" on every parents' card, has a card for the couple inviting in their own names, and adds the traditional date line for your city once the date, the muhurat time and the city are in (clear the line to leave it off). For grandparents inviting, type their names where the parents' names go and choose "grandson" or "granddaughter"; it cannot add the parents' line under the grandchild's name; and it has no Chi. or Chi. Sow. of its own: type them into the names if you want them. If the date is still open, our vivah muhurat list for 2026 and 2027 has the Drik-verified dates, and the kundali matching tool covers the step before that. When the date is fixed, you can request a purohit for the wedding.

How we verify: dates and muhurat timings in our guides are cross-checked against the panchang before publishing, and practical details - samagri, durations, dakshina ranges - reflect real bookings on Purohit.app. Traditions vary by community; your purohit's guidance prevails.
