Wedding Card Matter in Hindi: Shadi Card for Son, Daughter

wedding card matter in hindishadi card matterhindi wedding cardshubh mitivivah cardwedding card for sonwedding card for daughter

Printed Hindi wedding cards follow a fixed order, and two parts of that order need care: whose child is named first, and how the date is written. Each side prints its own card and puts its own child first, so the groom's parents and the bride's parents send different matter for the same wedding. The date is written the panchang way, as शुभ मिती with the month, tithi and samvat, and that is the line copied samples get wrong. Below is the complete matter for a son's wedding, what changes for a daughter's, the lines for a grandson and for grandparents who invite, and how to write the शुभ मिती line for your own date. Our Hindi wedding card maker starts from wording like this and fills the date line for you.

The order of a Hindi wedding card

  1. The invocation: ।। । at the top, often with the family deity beside it, as in ।। ।
  2. A verse: usually the Vakratunda shloka, or a doha that gives Ganesha the first invitation (see the optional lines below).
  3. मान्यवर, and one line that credits God and the ancestors.
  4. The names: चि. before the groom and सौ. कां. before the bride, each with a bracket underneath saying whose child they are. The mother is named before the father, and जी follows the men's names.
  5. The date sentence: शुभ मिती, the samvat, the weekday and the date, ending with सुसम्पन्न होगा (will take place).
  6. The request to come with your family and bless the couple.
  7. मांगलिक कार्यक्रम (the programme) and विवाह स्थल (the venue).
  8. The closing: a heading such as विनीत (humbly), दर्शनाभिलाषी (eager to see you) or स्वागतोत्सुक (eager to welcome you), over the names of the people inviting.

Wedding card matter for a son's wedding

This is the groom's side card, sent in his parents' names. It follows printed Hindi cards line by line; put in your own names, date and programme.

[name and address of the venue]

The date is a real one: Saturday 5 December 2026 is on Drik Panchang's list of vivah muhurats (New Delhi, 11:48 am to 7:00 am the next morning, Swati nakshatra), and the tithi at the 10:45 pm pheras is Dwadashi. Three things to notice in the names:

  • The groom's mother comes before his father:
  • The second bracket names the grandfather, सुपौत्र meaning grandson. If he has passed away, स्व. goes before his name: (सुपौत्र - स्व.
  • चि. is short for चिरंजीव, and the bride's सौ. कां. for सौभाग्यकांक्षिणी. Some cards print सौ. का. or चि. का. instead.

Printed cards write the numbers either way, 2083 or २०८३; the maker prints whichever you choose.

For a daughter's wedding: what changes

The bride's parents print their own card, and on it their daughter comes first. The rest keeps the same order. The names and the date sentence read:

This version joins the names with के संग and ends with को होना निश्चित हुआ है (has been fixed), the way a printed Rajasthani bride's card does; the के साथ ... को सुसम्पन्न होगा of the son's card appears on printed cards too, so use either. Some cards give only the father's name under the bride, followed by निवासी and the native village or town. The closing now carries the bride's side:

When the grandparents invite

If the grandparents are the ones inviting, the body of the card does not change. The grandson line stays under the groom's name, and the grandparents head the closing list, above the parents:

On a bride's card the word is सुपौत्री, granddaughter. The grandchildren of the house often fill the दर्शनाभिलाषी list, as on the son's card above.

The शुभ मिती line, and why the month changes after Purnima

मिती is the date, and शुभ मिती gives it the panchang way: month, paksha, tithi, then the samvat, followed by the weekday and the calendar date. A Hindi card uses the North Indian calendar, in which a month ends on Purnima, so the dark fortnight after each Purnima already carries the next month's name. Panchangs in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana end the month on Amavasya instead and give that same fortnight the old name. In the bright fortnight the two agree.

Wedding dateOn a Hindi cardIn a Marathi, Gujarati or Kannada panchang
Kartika Krishna Dwadashi
Kartika Krishna Pratipada
Margashirsha Shukla Tritiya

The second row is the one to watch. That Tuesday began as Kartika Purnima, and Purnima ended at 8:23 pm (Drik Panchang). The vivah muhurat that night starts at 11:25 pm, by which time a Hindi card is already in मार्गशीर्ष and the tithi is Pratipada, not the Purnima of the morning. Copy the month from a Marathi calendar, or from an app set to the South Indian month, and the Hindi card comes out a month behind. If your own purohit follows a Marathi or Gujarati panchang, keep his month instead; the mistake is mixing the two.

The संवत् is the Vikram Samvat: 2083 for weddings until Chaitra Shukla Pratipada on 7 April 2027, when 2084 begins. Panchangs also give a Shaka year, 1948 at present, which runs 135 years behind, and printed samples sometimes put it after संवत् by mistake: sample cards dated 2018 carry संवत् १९४०, the Shaka year, when the Vikram Samvat was 2075.

Two more checks. The Hindi cards we studied print no nakshatra and no lagna, so leave those out unless your purohit asks for them. And read the weekday against a calendar before printing; it is the word most easily left behind from a copied sample.

If the pheras are after midnight, the card keeps the evening's date and weekday, because a panchang day runs from sunrise to sunrise, but the tithi can change during the night. Drik's list for 5 December 2026 shows both Dwadashi and Trayodashi inside that night's window, so pheras late that night can fall in Trayodashi. Ask your purohit which tithi to print; the maker asks which night you mean and works the tithi out for the muhurat time itself.

Lines you can add

  • The Ganesha doha, printed in place of the shloka, which gives Ganesha the first invitation: ।
  • A note for cards sent on WhatsApp, asking guests to take the card as your personal visit:
(your blessing is the best gift).
  • Replies: उत्तराकांक्षी (awaiting your reply), with a name and a phone number or address under it.
  • मीठी मनुहार, the children's own request to come, printed with their names. A Rajasthani bride's card has it in Marwari, with the bride's nieces and younger cousins calling her मासी and जीजी (जलुल is a child saying जरूर):

Making the card

The Hindi wedding card maker follows much the same order, with fewer of the optional lines and its own date style: the venue comes before the programme; there is no मान्यवर line, grandfather's bracket, doha or "treat this card as our visit" line; and it writes "का शुभ विवाह" and "दिनांक 5 दिसंबर 2026" where the samples above have "का शुभविवाह" and "05.12.2026". It names your own child first when you choose the groom's parents or the bride's parents, and fills the शुभ मिती line from the date, the muhurat time and the city. You type the names, the programme, the opening line and who is inviting; a few of its fixed words differ from the samples above (it closes with दर्शनाभिलाषी, and writes सायं or रात्रि for an evening time). Show the date line to your purohit before you print. If the date is not fixed yet, our vivah muhurat list for 2026 and 2027 has the Drik-verified dates, and how marriage dates are fixed explains what the purohit weighs before choosing one. For an English card for the same wedding, see wedding card matter in English, and when you are ready you can request a purohit for the wedding itself.

How we verify: dates and muhurat timings in our guides are cross-checked against the panchang before publishing, and practical details - samagri, durations, dakshina ranges - reflect real bookings on Purohit.app. Traditions vary by community; your purohit's guidance prevails.
