Barasala Invitation in English & Telugu: Naming Card Matter

A naming ceremony invitation tells guests whose baby is being named, the day and muhurat time, and where to come, usually your own home; whether the name itself goes on the card is your choice. The samples use a baby born on Sunday 17 January 2027 at 11:30 pm and named on the 12th day, Thursday 28 January 2027, at 10:30 am (11 am in Hindi); your purohit fixes your own day and time.

Barasala invitation in English

Put "Barasala" under the English title, so friends from other states know the day and Telugu relatives see their own word. From the father's parents, the name kept for the ceremony:

Make this card with your names and date.

Grandparents call the baby their grandson or granddaughter, put the parents on the line under it, and close with the parents' names "and family"; either side's parents use the same words.

From the parents

One parent alone writes "cordially invites ... of her daughter" (or his). For a boy, "their son"; "their little one" keeps it general.

In the baby's voice

A playful card the baby "sends", as Telugu templates do, calling the two of you Amma and Appa, Amma and Nanna, Aai and Baba or Mummy and Papa:

With the name kept back, the line under "I have arrived!" becomes "My name is a secret until then. Come and hear it first!"

When the grandparents invite, the parents go in brackets under the name, (శ్రీమతి స్వాతి మరియు శ్రీ కార్తీక్ గార్ల కుమార్తె), the sentence says మా మనుమరాలికి (to our granddaughter) in place of మా కుమార్తెకు, and the grandparents sign it. Have an elder read the Telugu before you print, and show the date line to your purohit.

The baby's own barasala card in Telugu

Telugu templates have a playful card in the baby's voice, with the date under "when?" (ఎప్పుడంటే) and the place under "where?" (ఎక్కడంటే):

It means "my amma and nanna want to put me in the cradle and give me a name, so you must all come!" and, after the name, "come and bless me!". For a surprise, the name line becomes నా పేరేంటో తెలుసుకోడానికి ఖచ్చితంగా వస్తారు కదూ? మర్చిపోవద్దు!, "you will surely come to find out my name, won't you? Don't forget!"

Namkaran card matter in Hindi

• पुत्र रत्न प्राप्ति के शुभ अवसर पर means "on the happy occasion of being blessed with a son"; for a daughter, कन्या रत्न प्राप्ति.
• From the father's parents it becomes पौत्र रत्न प्राप्ति (a grandson), from the mother's parents दौहित्र रत्न प्राप्ति, the word for a daughter's son, with the parents under the name as (सुपुत्र - श्रीमती नेहा एवं श्री रोहित).
• प्रीतिभोज ... से आपके आगमन तक says the meal is served from 1 pm until you arrive. Many cards add एवं समस्त ___ परिवार, with the family name, under the names.
• The date line says Magha where the southern lines say Pausha, because the north Indian month ends on the full moon; our Hindi wedding card matter guide explains this, and the मीठी मनुहार line from the children of the house.

Naamakarana invitation in Kannada

The request asks everyone to come with their family to "our darling daughter's" naming and bless her. For a son, ಮಗನ; from the grandparents ಮೊಮ್ಮಗಳ or ಮೊಮ್ಮಗನ on either side, with the parents under the name: ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಕಾವ್ಯಾ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀ ಕಿರಣ್, ಇವರ ಸುಪುತ್ರಿ (ಸುಪುತ್ರ for a boy). ತಮ್ಮ ಸುಖಾಗಮನ ಬಯಸುವವರು means "those who wish for your happy arrival".

Barse invitation in Marathi

A Marathi barse card uses the patrika's own lines: स. न. वि. वि. (loving greetings, and a special request), आमचे येथे श्री कृपेकरून (at our home, by God's grace) and the मिती ... शके date.

As a naming ceremony, the sentence reads हिचा नामकरण सोहळा; for a son it opens आमचा चिरंजीव and हिचे बारसे becomes याचे बारसे (याचा नामकरण सोहळा), and from the grandparents आमची नात or आमचा नातू. A Marathi card often adds समस्त ___ परिवार आणि आप्तेष्ट under the names, with the family name. The paternal aunt calls out the name at a barse, so a barse card can keep the name off and let her say it first.

Peyar soottu vizha invitation in Tamil

உ at the top is Ganesha's mark, the pillaiyar suzhi, with கணபதி துணை under it. The date is the Tamil solar date, the 14th of Thai (தை மாதம் 14ஆம் தேதி), then the lunar tithi; பெரியோர்களால் நிச்சயிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது says the elders fixed the day, and தங்கள் நல்வரவை விரும்பும் means "wishing for your good arrival". For a daughter the sentence says எங்கள் அன்பு மகளுக்குப்.

What goes on a naming card

1. A line to Ganesha or your family deity: ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥, or "|| Shree Venkateshwara Swamy Prasanna ||" with your deity's name.
2. The title, with your word for the day under it.
3. The baby's name, or a line saying it will be announced.
4. Who invites, and the request to bless the baby (above the name on English cards).
5. The date and muhurat time, with the date line if you want it.
6. The address the way a driver needs it, then the cradle rite or the meal.
7. Optional lines: the birth star, the elders' blessings, a sibling's line, "no gifts", a phone number.
8. Your names under "With best compliments from", निमंत्रक or ఆహ్వానించువారు.

Most homes name the baby on the 11th or 12th day, once the birth impurity (sutak) is over, and a later muhurat is just as good; our namakaran ceremony guide explains how the day and the name's first letter are chosen. The word for the day:

• Namakaran or naamkaran sanskar (नामकरण संस्कार) in Hindi, often on the 11th day in the north, or with a Satyanarayan katha later.
• Barasala (బారసాల, also నామకరణ డోలారోహణ) in Telugu: the naming with the cradle rite, when the baby is first laid in the ఉయ్యాల (cradle). Many Telugu homes hold it on the 21st day, others on the 11th or 16th day or in the third month.
• Barsa or barse (बारसे) in Marathi, on the 12th day, with the baby in the palna (cradle).
• Naamakarana (ನಾಮಕರಣ ಸಮಾರಂಭ) in Kannada, often with the cradle rite, ತೊಟ್ಟಿಲು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ.
• Peyar soottu vizha (பெயர் சூட்டு விழா, also பெயர் சூட்டும் விழா) in Tamil; a Tamil Brahmin card may say நாமகரணம், or name the purification rite, புண்யாஹவாசனம் (punyahavachanam).
• Noolukettu (also peridal) in Kerala, on the 28th day, when a black thread (aranjanam) is tied round the baby's waist.
• In Bengal the naming often joins the annaprashan (mukhe bhaat) months later; see our annaprashan guide.

The lines that change

• Keeping the name for the ceremony. It is first written in a plate of rice and whispered in the baby's ear, so the card can say "Her name will be announced at the ceremony" (His name, The baby's name, Their names).
• Two names. A rashi name from the birth star and an everyday name: print the second in brackets under the first.
• Twins. "cordially invite you to grace the naming ceremony of their twins", with both names on one line, "Aditi & Anagha".
• An older brother or sister. "Come and bless my little sister! - Aarav", near the end; on a Hindi card, under मीठी मनुहार.
• A late grandparent. Under "Blessings from", with the marker before the name: "Late Shri Ramaiah" over "Smt. Lakshmamma". Hindi writes स्व., Marathi कै., Telugu కీ.శే., Tamil தெய்வத்திரு, and Kannada cards often ದಿ॥.
• The baby's birth star. Optional; printed naming cards usually leave it off. Added, it shows where the first letter came from: Krittika's first quarter gives "A", hence Aditi. Leave the birth time off. See finding your rashi and nakshatra.
• No gifts. "Presents in the form of Blessings only.", आपका आशीर्वाद ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ उपहार है।, ತಮ್ಮ ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಿಯೇ ಉಡುಗೊರೆ. or फक्त आशीर्वाद.

The date, the time and the date line

Print the muhurat time to the minute, the moment your purohit fixed for the naming (see what a muhurat is). The date line (samvatsara, month and tithi) is optional, though Telugu and Tamil cards make it the main sentence and Marathi puts it inside the sentence. Its tithi is the one running at the muhurat (check it on our panchang), and its nakshatra is the star of that moment, not the baby's; an English card from our maker leaves that star out.

For a naming before sunrise, print the calendar date of the morning guests come, marked "Thursday, 28 January 2027, 5:45 am (early morning)"; our maker asks which morning you mean and then prints "(early morning)" on an English card. The panchang day begins at sunrise, so a traditional Telugu sentence gives Wednesday's date, 27-01-2027, and adds (తెల్లవారితే గురువారం), "dawning Thursday", with తెల్లవారుజామున for the early hours. A Tamil line keeps the morning's own date and writes the time as அதிகாலை.

A WhatsApp message to send with the card

For a surprise, leave the name out and end with "Her name stays a secret until then, so come and hear it first!" Afterwards, send the card with the name: "Thank you for your blessings. Meet our Aditi!" Send the location as its own message, so guests can tap it.

Making the card

The naming ceremony invitation maker starts from these wordings in all six languages, with the parents, either set of grandparents or, in English and Telugu, the baby inviting, and joins the naming to your home's ceremony: barasala, barse, the cradle rite, a Satyanarayan katha or the first birthday. It writes the date line for your date, muhurat time and town, works out the baby's birth star and rashi from the birth date and time, and adds the नामकरण संस्कार row to a Hindi card's कार्यक्रम by itself. You can keep the name secret and download the card again with it after the ceremony.
