Munj Patrika Majkur: 15 Marathi Wordings with English Meaning

A Marathi munj patrika is written like a Marathi lagna patrika: स. न. वि. वि., then आमचे येथे श्री कृपेकरून, the boy's name with his parents in brackets, the मिती line with the Shaka year, and a request to bless the बटू, the boy receiving the sacred thread. What changes is who invites (the grandparents or the parents), how many boys there are, and whether the words go to print or to WhatsApp. Below are 17 wordings: 8 complete patrikas, 7 WhatsApp messages and an English card and message, with the meaning of every line of the first patrika and the lines you can swap in. All of them use Sunday 11 April 2027 at 10:30 am in Pune only to show how the date is written; your purohit fixes the muhurat from the boy's horoscope. The names on the card

• व्रतबंध (vratabandha): the name printed patrikas use, as in याचा व्रतबंध सोहळा.
• मुंज (munj): the everyday word, from the girdle of munja grass the boy is given; मौंजीबंधन is its formal form. A card can say याची मुंज instead.
• उपनयन (upanayan): the Sanskrit name, the one our upanayanam guide uses for the rite across India.
• जानवे (janave): the sacred thread itself, the यज्ञोपवीत.
• बटू (batu): the boy on the day of his munj, in the request बटूस शुभाशीर्वाद द्यावेत (please bless the batu). Before his name the card writes चि., short for चिरंजीव.
• The programme words: देवदेवक (setting up the family's devak, its guardian deities, before the rite), उदकशांत or उदकशांती (a peace rite with water, often the day before), मातृभोजन (the boy's last meal eaten with his mother before the thread), भिक्षावळ (the batu asking for alms, first from his mother and then from relatives; some homes make it a small procession), सोडमुंज (the closing rite that releases him from the vow) and भोजन समारंभ. This one is in the older print style: the Marathi numerals, शुद्ध for the bright fortnight, the samvatsara (प्लवंग नाम संवत्सर, the year that begins at Gudi Padwa 2027), the line कार्य सिद्धीस नेण्यास श्री समर्थ आहे (God is able to see this through), and वरील विनंतीस मान देऊन अगत्य येण्याची कृपा करावी (please honour the request above and be sure to come).

The मिती line and the Shaka year

मिती is the date the panchang way. A Marathi card gives the lunar month, the fortnight, the tithi as a number and the Shaka year, then the weekday and the calendar date: मिती चैत्र शुक्लपक्ष 5 शके 1949 रविवार, दि. 11 एप्रिल 2027 रोजी. Three things to get right:

• The Shaka year turns at Gudi Padwa. It is 1948 until Wednesday 7 April 2027 and 1949 from that day. The sample date falls four days after the turn, so a patrika copied from a munj held in March 2027 would print last year's शके. The samvatsara turns the same day, from पराभव to प्लवंग.
• The month is the Marathi one. Maharashtra's panchang ends the month on Amavasya, so in the dark fortnight after a Purnima a Marathi card keeps the old month's name while a Hindi card is already in the next month. Our guide to Hindi wedding card matter shows the two side by side. In that fortnight a Hindi calendar will not match your card, and the card is still right.
• The tithi is the one at the muhurat, not at sunrise. Write the fortnight as शुक्लपक्ष or शुद्ध (bright) and कृष्णपक्ष or वद्य (dark), and the time as सकाळी 10 वा. 30 मि., with पहाटे, सकाळी, दुपारी, सायंकाळी or रात्री for the part of the day.

Making the card

The Marathi munj patrika maker follows patrika 1, and patrika 2 without the grandparents' bracket: it opens with स. न. वि. वि. and आमचे येथे श्री कृपेकरून, lets you choose व्रतबंध, मुंज or उपनयन, the grandparents or the parents as hosts and ज्येष्ठ or कनिष्ठ for the boy, and writes the मिती ... शके line from the date, the muhurat time and the city. It prints the mother's name first in each couple and makes a card for one boy, so for two brothers start from wordings 3 and 4 here. Show the मिती line to your purohit before you print.
