Shashtipoorthi Invitation Wording: Tamil, Telugu & English

A shashtipoorthi invitation reads like a second wedding card: the children invite, both parents are named together at the centre, and the husband ties the mangalsutra again. Below are complete wordings in Tamil (the sashtiapthapoorthi or manivizha card), English and Telugu, from the children or the couple. Each uses Saturday 10 April 2027 at 9 am only to show how a date is written; your purohit fixes the day.

Lines you can change

• A manivizha card: put மணிவிழா in the title and in the sentence: அவர்களின் மணிவிழா பெரியோர்களால் நிச்சயித்தவண்ணம் ...
• A fuller title: சஷ்டியப்தபூர்த்தி - மாங்கல்ய தாரண வைபவ பத்திரிக்கை, the card for the sashtiapthapoorthi and the tying of the mangalsutra.
• The couple's own card: எங்களது சஷ்டியப்தபூர்த்தி வைபவம் பெரியோர்களால் நிச்சயித்தவண்ணம் மேற்படி தினத்தில் நடைபெற உள்ளதால், தாங்கள் தங்கள் குடும்பத்தினருடன் வருகை தந்து விழாவினைச் சிறப்பிக்குமாறு அன்புடன் அழைக்கிறோம். It asks guests to grace the day rather than to bless the couple, and is signed கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி - சரோஜா after இப்படிக்கு,.
• The older, longer form brings the father in through his family first, ___ அவர்களின் இளைய குமாரரும், ___ அவர்களின் சகோதரரும், எங்களின் தகப்பனாருமான ("youngest son of ___, brother of ___, and our father"), writes வைதீக முறை ("in the Vedic way") before the rite's name, and asks guests to the அபிஷேகம் மற்றும் மாங்கல்ய தாரணம் நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு.
• The Thirukkadaiyur blessing, above the date line: திருக்கடவூர் இறைவி அபிராமி உடனுறை இறைவன் அமுதகடேசர் அருளாசியுடன் ("with the blessing of Abhirami, goddess of Thirukkadavur, and of Amudhakadesar, the lord who dwells with her"). Tamil cards can open with it even when the rite is held in a wedding hall. In the maker, type it after உ in the "Line at the top of the card" box under "Add more to the card" (கார்டின் மேல் வரி on the Tamil page).

The couple's card says "his Shashtipoorthi" because the rite marks the husband's sixty years. The muhurtam is printed to the minute: it is the moment your purohit fixed (see what a muhurat is), not a time for guests to arrive.

• The date sentence reads: Swasti Sri, by the lunar reckoning, in the Plavanga year, Chaitra shuddha chavithi (the fourth day of the bright fortnight), that is on 10-04-2027, Saturday morning at 09:00 (గం॥ hours, ని॥ minutes), in Krittika nakshatra and Vrishabha lagna, in the good muhurat.
• ... దంపతులకు షష్ట్యబ్దపూర్తి మహోత్సవము జరిపించుటకు దైవజ్ఞులచే నిశ్చయింపబడినది. "The shashtyabdapurti of the couple has been fixed by the daivajnas", those who read the panchang; the request after it: "so we pray that you all come, accept the honours we offer and make us happy".
• A fuller top: a heading that names the family, ___ వారి షష్ట్యబ్దపూర్తి ఆహ్వానం ("the ___ family's shashtyabdapurti invitation"), and the Venkateswara shloka under the top line: కళ్యాణాద్భుతగాత్రాయ కామితార్థప్రదాయినే ।

• The couple's own card drops the names from the sentence, మా షష్ట్యబ్దపూర్తి మహోత్సవము జరిపించుటకు దైవజ్ఞులచే నిశ్చయింపబడినది., and signs కృష్ణమూర్తి, సరోజ under ఆహ్వానించువారు.

What goes on the card

The day has several names: shashtyabdapurti (shashti, sixty; abda, year; purti, completion), షష్ట్యబ్దపూర్తి in Telugu and shashtipoorthi or shashtipurthi in everyday English; sashtiapthapoorthi, சஷ்டியப்தபூர்த்தி, as Tamil writes it; manivizha (மணிவிழா) and arubathaam kalyanam (அறுபதாம் கல்யாணம், "the 60th wedding"); and ugraratha shanti (உக்ரரத சாந்தி), the peace rite held at 60.

1. The top line (உ on a Tamil card, often with the family deity under it as ஸ்ரீ ___ துணை), the title with the word for invitation and, on a Tamil card, the greeting.
2. The date line: the year, month and tithi, the nakshatra, the muhurat time and the lagna.
3. Who the couple are to the people inviting, then both names together, father first, in the largest letters: திரு. ___ திருமதி. ___, శ్రీమాన్ ___ శ్రీమతి ___ దంపతులకు ("to the couple"), "Shri ___ & Smt. ___". When one parent has passed away, the card names the parent being honoured alone ("of their beloved mother", எங்கள் தாயார், మా తల్లిగారు) and remembers the other in a line at the end, in your own words, such as "In loving memory of our father, Shri K. Venkatesh". There is then no kalyanam or mangalsutra row, so ask your purohit which rites he will do.
4. One sentence: the elders have fixed the rite, so please come and bless them.
5. The venue and the programme with times.
6. Those inviting, usually the children, in their own voice (మా తల్లిదండ్రులు, "our parents"; எங்களின் தகப்பனாருமான, "who is our father"); a Tamil card is signed after இப்படிக்கு, by the sons and their wives, each pair as "son - daughter-in-law". The grandchildren come last, under "With Blessings and Love" in English, and on a Tamil card under the second closing line, தங்கள் வருகையை அன்புடன் எதிர்நோக்கும் சுற்றமும் நட்பும் ("relatives and friends who look forward to your coming").

Why 60: the panchang names its years in a cycle of 60, so at 60 the year of one's birth comes round again. By the Ugadi year, someone born between 10 April 1967 and 28 March 1968 was born in Plavanga, which returns at Ugadi on 7 April 2027, so the Telugu and English samples name it; by the Tamil year, Plavanga ran from 14 April 1967 to 12 April 1968. Your purohit fixes the day, often on the birth nakshatra in the month of birth, so it rarely falls on the calendar birthday; ask before you book a hall.

The programme rows

Print the rites your purohit has fixed, with their times:

• Udakashanti: a peace rite with water, mantras recited over a kalasha, often the day before, with Ganapati and navagraha homams where your purohit includes them.
• Ayushya homam, the homam for long life (ayus), and the mrityunjaya homam, offered to Shiva as Mrityunjaya, "the one who conquers death".
• Rudra ekadasini: the Rudram recited eleven times, usually the day before or with the shanti.
• Kalasabhishekam (கலசாபிஷேகம்): the couple are bathed with water from the kalashas worshipped in the rites.
• The kalyanam, with the mangalya dharanam (திருமாங்கல்யதாரணம்) inside the muhurat: the husband ties the mangalsutra on his wife again. A Tamil programme can read ✱ 9 மணி : கலசாபிஷேகம் ✱ 10 மணி : திருமாங்கல்யதாரணம்.
• Lunch: "Lunch to follow" in English, மதிய விருந்து in Tamil, విందు in Telugu.

The date line, and the year Tamil and Telugu cards disagree on

• The maker's line takes the tithi and nakshatra running at the muhurat, not at sunrise. Some purohits print the sunrise tithi instead (on 10 April 2027 both are Chaturthi; our panchang shows when each tithi ends), and his word is final.
• The lagna may be the one of the main moment, not of the window's start: one Chennai card with a 9 am window in Dhanu lagna prints Makara lagna, which rose at 9:56 that morning, just before the 10 am mangalya dharanam. If your purohit names a different lagna, print his.
• The year name turns on different days. For Saturday, 10 April 2027, the Telugu line names Plavanga and the Tamil line Parabhava, and both are right: the Telugu year turns at Ugadi (7 April 2027), the Tamil year at Chithirai 1 (14 April 2027, after which a Tamil card reads பிலவங்க வருடம் சித்திரை மாதம்). The English line follows the Ugadi year, so from 7 to 13 April 2027 a Tamil home's English card names Plavanga while its Tamil card names Parabhava; ask your purohit which year to print.
• Tamil almanacs can differ by a day on the date of the month, so print the date your purohit's almanac gives.
• A muhurat before sunrise is printed differently: a Telugu card puts it under the evening before with (తెల్లవారితే ...), "when it dawns", and the next day's name, while a Tamil card prints the morning's own date. The maker asks which morning you mean.

Temple, hall or home

Many hold the rite at the Amritaghateswarar-Abhirami temple in Thirukkadaiyur, Mayiladuthurai district: the temple of the Markandeya story, known for its 60th, 70th and 80th birthday rites. For a temple card, name the temple and the town in the venue, and give the lunch place if it is elsewhere; in the maker's town box, type "Thirukkadaiyur, Mayiladuthurai". For a rite at home, write the address the way a driver needs it, and send the location as its own WhatsApp message after the card.

Bhimaratha shanti and sathabhishekam cards

Later cards keep the same shape; only the title and the rite's name in the sentence change, for example "cordially invite you to grace the occasion of the Sathabhishekam of their beloved parents". At a sathabhishekam above all, it is the couple who bless the guests.

• The ages differ between traditions. A Chennai purohit's list gives ugraratha shanti at 60, bhimaratha shanti at 70, vijayaratha shanti at 78, and sathabhishekam, as one rite with sahasra chandra darshan, after 80 years and 10 months; other lists put bhimaratha shanti as late as 80, or sathabhishekam at 80 years and 8 months. Ask your purohit before you print an age; the maker prints 70 for a bhimaratha shanti unless you change it, and prints an age on a sathabhishekam card only when you type one.
• Why 80 years and 10 months: a thousand lunar months of about 29.53 days come to 29,531 days, about 80.85 years. By then a person has seen a thousand full moons, which is what sahasra chandra darshan means.
• The titles: in Tamil பீமரத சாந்தி, விஜயரத சாந்தி, சதாபிஷேகம் and சஹஸ்ர சந்திர தரிசனம்; in Telugu భీమరథ శాంతి and సహస్ర చంద్ర దర్శనం, the same day as the sathabhishekam in the list above.

Making the card

The shashtipoorthi invitation maker writes these wordings in English, Telugu or Tamil, from the children or the couple, with an optional photo of the couple, the programme rows and the grandchildren's line. Give it the date, the muhurat time and the town, and it writes the date line for that moment. "Copy the wording" gives you the text for a printing press, and when the date is fixed you can request a purohit for the shashtipoorthi.
